The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) announced it has given an honorary route name to one of its new bus routes to thank Milwaukee Bucks’ star Giannis Antetokounmpo for his important role on the team and in the community.
MCTS has been a part of the fabric of the Milwaukee community for decades and now so will the Bucks’ superstar who, along with his teammates, brought our city its first NBA championship in 50 years. More importantly, Giannis has been an upstanding figure in the Milwaukee community ever since he arrived back in 2013, including his participation in the social justice movement of 2020.
That’s why MCTS felt it was the right time to do something unique and memorable—name a bus route in his honor. Officially named “Route 34 (Hopkins-Congress),” this route went into service with its honorary name the Giannis Line, on Sunday, December 5, 2021, just one day before Giannis’ 27th birthday! This route and Giannis’ uniform already share the same number, so it’s only natural to name the route in recognition of the historic contributions Giannis has already given to the people of Milwaukee. In other words, this is MCTS’s birthday gift to the MVP!
The Giannis Line operates every 25-30 minutes all day, every day, making connections to dozens of MCTS routes across the county. Recently included as a new route in its system redesign project, MCTS NEXT, this route features new cross-county routing with expanded service connecting Congress Street and Hopkins Street with N. 6th Street and Downtown Milwaukee. In addition, this route provides new travel and connection opportunities for residents, workers, and students and aligns with Milwaukee County’s vision to advance Racial Equity throughout the county.
We look forward to many more years of cheering on Giannis, his teammates and the entire Bucks’ franchise as they strive to bring another NBA title to Milwaukee. Happy Birthday, Giannis!
